BIO

Shyam is an independent Barrister at Law.  He collaborates with Sewraj Solicitors since 2017.

 

Shyam specialises in civil law and global business advisory services.

 

His practice encompasses business law, employment law, construction law and family law.

 

He regularly assists international clients looking to relocate or establish activities in Mauritius and in setting up global business companies licensed by the Financial Services Commission.

 

His clients locally include small and medium businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals.

 

Shyam also acts as prosecuting counsel for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

 

Recent activities include:

  • Setting up a licensed investment advisor under the global business regime.
  • Securing a ship arrest on behalf of a shipping agent.
  • Advising a world leading ship liner company setting up in Mauritius.
  • Acting on behalf of a major construction firm in several claims against the State of Mauritius.
  • Appearing for a major international airline, defending passenger claims.
  • Appearing for an insurance company in a disputed claim for liability.
  • Appearing for and advising an international call centre company on employment law matters and drafting contracts.
  • Acting as chairman of disciplinary committees for several companies
  • Complex divorce litigation involving disputed assets and parties located both in Mauritius and abroad.

 

Shyam holds an LLB (Hons.) from the London School of Economics and an MBA from Edinburgh Business School.  He was called to the Bar of England and Wales on 2009 and the Mauritian Bar in 2011.  Prior to joining the Bar, Shyam worked in the legal team of a major offshore management company and the Board of Investment of Mauritius.

 

Shyam teaches Corporate Governance at the Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas, based in Mauritius.

 

He held the post of Treasurer of the Mauritius Bar Association in 2019.
